Movado History

The history of the Movado watches goes back to the year 1881.
In this year Achilles Ditesheim hired 6 watchmakers and opened his workshop in a small town in Switzerland called La Chaux de fonds.

In 1905 Ditesheim changes the name of his company to Movado. In the language of Esperanto the word movado means "always in motion"

1912: The polyplan is invented. This patented revolutionary construction contains 3 planes, and fits in the case that is curved to follow the curves of the wrist.

In the following years many new and inovative designs ar produced and one on the most remarkable ones is the "digital" watch that displays time with numbers.

1946: A new era in wrist watches, with the introduction of the self winding calendomatic. This features a month, day and central date.

1947: The single dot watch dial that will earn world renown as The Movado Museum Watch is created by Nathan George Horwitt, the first artist to explore the concept of time as design.

Note: Between 1948 and 1975 Horwitt, the creator of the museum watch, and the Movado company have been fighting, over the fact that the watch they put on the market, was an illegal use of his creation. Finally in 1975 they settled for $29000.

1956:The acclaimed Kingmatic series of rotor-driven timepieces is introduced, marking a technological advancement in automatic wristwatches.

1970:The leading Movado watch model in 1970, the Datron chronograph with classic tonneau-shaped case and self-winding movement, was available with a rotating bezel and a number of dial variations.

1981:Uniting the dot motif from the celebrated Museum dial with the sportive spirit of stainless steel, Movado launches Imperiale, the highly popular bracelet watch later renamed Sports Edition.

1983: MGI Founder Gedalio Grinberg Under the leadership of its founder Gedalio Grinberg, Movado Group Inc., then North American Watch Corp., acquires the Movado brand – and with it, one of the most iconic watch dials of all time.

1996:The introduction of Vizio, post-modern watch design of architectural inspiration that expresses Movado’s unwavering commitment to design innovation.

2000:A classic style takes futuristic form with the debut of the Movado SE, an evolution of the original Sports Edition design with a new, sleekly sculptured silhouette.

2001:The Elliptica wristwatch is revealed, with its gracefully curved case and striking linear dial: avant garde yet classic, the essence of Movado.

2003:Debut of the Museum Automatic – Movado’s legendary single dot dial, an icon of Modernism, is offered in a watch with a fine 21-jewel self-winding movement and sapphire crystal case-back.

2005:Strato, the first wrist watch to feature Movado’s patented Museum Setting – a diamond bezel the lies protected beneath the sapphire crystal, creating a look of brilliant mystery – is launched.

2006:Commemorating 125 years of artistry and innovation in design, Movado issues the M125 collection highlighted by this limited edition men’s Sapphire model with official M125 logo-stamped case-back.

2006:Launch of Series 800, the art of performance – fine Swiss quartz and automatic sport timepieces marked by sculptured contours and signature details that pay homage to the design legacy of Movado.

2007:In celebration of the 60th Anniversary of the legendary watch dial conceived by artist Nathan George Horwitt in 1947 and regarded today as a modern icon, Movado introduces Museum Color Dials in a sophisticated new color palette.

2009:Premiere of the meticulously engineered Movado Master™, dynamic watch design rooted in the strong industrial and architectural expressions of the Bauhaus movement.

2010:Launch of Movado BOLD, time with a new attitude, energized by color. Watches and chronographs featuring high tech materials, bold signature dots and bright accents in high-intensity hues.
